Thesis Title:

“When the New Clashes the Old”: Realistic Destruction of Medieval Wall Under Modern Firepower

Statement of Purpose:

This project aims for visualizing the idea of modern military technology facing off the ancient world that is unfamilar to human at this age. It is inspired by the popular idea of fictionalizing clashes between two forces that never face off in the real history, and in this case, the modern military unit facing off medieval city defense wall. By using visual effect techniques, it is possible to depict the destructing power of modern weaponry on the facility made from ancient technique.

This project requires a pipeline that involves different DCCs and most parts of visual effect creation(FX, Lookdev, Compositing). It is helpful for me to practice cooperation between different sides in visual effect pipeline since my career in the future is to leading my own visual effect team. It also contributes a interesting idea that is not touched mostly in modern media and a visualized outcome of a scene that is rarely recorded by camera in history.

Thesis Statement:

The interesting idea of military technology, which is designed to effectively work in modern scenario, facing off the facility that is most crucial and time consuming to build, the defensive city wall, is not touched in most of the modern media. It is a topic hard to create because of the knowledge required. The understanding of history and military technologies are necessary in such topic but aren’t the popular among general artist communities. Through the works done in this project, it can contribute as a valuable reference for other artists in similar projects in the future.

The Concerning Question:

Q: "Wouldn't the tank gun just pulverize the wall?"

A: Not Really. When the round blasts the wall, the spot that got hit is going to be heavily damaged, but it shouldn't be totally destroyed. There can still be a visible process of the remaining wall collapsing, which is the FX the project is going to focus on. Here are some examples of similar but less protected structures that withstood heavy bombardment of modern firepower.
